ABOUT THE COURSE
The beginner course in Carnatic vocal music is designed for individuals who have little to no experience in singing Carnatic music. The course is typically structured to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and techniques of Carnatic music, as well as to provide a foundation for further study and practice. The course may be delivered through a combination of group and individual lessons, with an emphasis on practical learning through singing and listening. Students will learn the basics of Carnatic music, such as sruti, swara, and tala, and develop basic singing skills, including breath control, posture, and pitch control.
They will be introduced to the basic ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles) used in Carnatic music, and will learn to sing simple songs and compositions in the Carnatic style. Students will also be introduced to the basic notation and lyrics (sa-re-ga-ma-pa-da-ni) used in Carnatic music. The course may also include an introduction to the various forms and styles of Carnatic music, like devotional, classical and light classical music.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understanding the basic concepts and structure of Carnatic music, such as sruti, swara, and tala
- Development of basic singing skills, including breath control, posture, and pitch control
- Familiarization with the basic ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles) used in Carnatic music
- Development of the ability to sing simple songs and compositions in the Carnatic style
- Basic understanding of notation and lyrics (sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-da-ni)
- Ability to sing in the various forms of carnatic music.
- Familiarity with the fundamental principles of Indian classical music and culture.
- An ability to sing simple compositions with correct pronunciations, rhythm and melody.
- The ability to express oneself through music.
By the end of the course, students should have a solid foundation in Carnatic vocal music and be able to continue their studies with more advanced techniques, repertoire, and performance opportunities.
