PRACTICAL TIPS TO INCULCATE READING HABITS AMONG KIDS

Hobbies are a beautiful part of one’s life. It starts from being toddlers to having an impact as your wrinkles grow deeper. Spending leisure time is something that one has to equip oneself of. Painting, acting, singing, playing an instrument and even cooking are some popular things we can think of as hobbies. What about reading? Something that looks cool and eclectic, but not everyone does. It is said books are a man’s best friend. It stays with you forever and helps you get a larger perspective with each turning page.

Inculcating the reading hobby in kids, is probably one of the best gifts that you can give as a parent. Want your kids to read? Here are some tips to help you inculcate the reading gene in your kid.

1. Set an example:

Children are said to be more of observers than listeners. You can allot time for reading on a day when you and your kid read books together. This might even get you into the habit of reading, which is beneficial still.

2. Tell them to write their own stories:

Story writing is known to be a good brain exercise. This method will also bring their creativity out and make them feel productive. You can also enroll them in an online storytelling course for kids to help them get a mentor.

3. Enacting scenes:

Ask your kids to enact scenes from their favorite book and pay extra attention to their phonetics. This will also help them build self-confidence and enhance their public speaking skills. Enacting also helps them be imaginative and enhance their creative skills.

Tip: Here’s an interactive storytelling course that you can enroll your kids for: KISSE KAHANIYA ULTIMATE STORYTELLING AND PUPPETRY WORKSHOP.

4. Use e-readers:

As much as we want, we cannot deny the tech and digital era has engulfed the kids too. Right now we can lure them into reading by using their favorite new toy, the devices. Use e-readers to encourage them to read preferably with pictures to keep it interesting.

5. Choose the genre:

Let the kids decide for themselves the genre they like and make sure it's age-appropriate. Imposing a certain genre might restrict their thinking.

6. Read to your kids:

Remember how Grandmas were all ready to tell Bedtime stories? It did have an effect on the brain. After all, Grandma’s recipes are always with a catch of healthiness. Read books to them and enact scenes and get their attention, make these sessions as entertaining as possible to encourage them to read and engage them in the book.

7. Enroll for story reading online sessions:

Reading along with other kids in a guided format will also encourage fun and discipline in the child. A little bit of healthy competition is good.

8. Create story reading groups among working mothers/parents:

In the case of working parents, you can make a group and turn by turn each parent can volunteer to read stories and make a summative assessment of the children's learnings during weekends.

Imprinting good values on children is something all parents strive for and do extremely well in the same. Hopefully, these tips and tricks would help you out in a teeny way for your little human at home. And finally, once a reader is always a reader!
